Gilbert History

Gilbert was founded in 1891 along the Arizona Eastern Railway and the town built there was incorporated in 1920. It is named after William "Bobby" Gilbert, who owned the land where the town was built. The town has been called the "Hay Capital of the World."

The population of Gilbert is about 191,000 and has nearly doubled since the 2000 United States Census count. In 2000, there were 35,405 households, and 28,925 families residing in the town. There were 2,553.7 people per square mile living in Gilbert. The racial makeup of the town was 85.73% White, 2.41% Black or African American, 0.62% Native American, 3.59% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 4.77% from other races, and 2.77% from two or more races. 11.87% of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.

About half of Gilbert households had children under the age of 18 living with them, 69.5% were married couples living together, 8.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.3% were non-families. 12.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 1.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.10 and the average family size was 3.42.

The age of Gilbert residents is spread out, with 34.2% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 37.8% from 25 to 44, 16.9% from 45 to 64, and 3.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 98.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.1 males.

As of 2006, the median income for a Gilbert household was $76,376, and the median income for a family was $82,935. Males had a median income of $50,028 versus $32,381 for females. The per capita income for the town was $24,795. About 2.5% of families and 3.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 3.0% of those under age 18 and 5.9% of those age 65 or over.

Gilbert is home to a large Mormon (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) population. To serve the growing community, a church temple is being built in Gilbert. Gilbert also enjoys relatively low crime and was the largest city in the United States without a murder in 2005.
